Well, I'm no database expert but if MySQL doesn't need you meets and you don't want to go spend lots of money for a commercial DBS on Linux, you should make sure to check out PostgreSQL the next time you need to set one up under Unix. It is more advanced than MySQL, e.g. providing stored procedures and row-level locking. I haven't used it myself but I do know that it is often used when a full-fledged DBS is needed instead of the rather low-end MySQL solution.
