I disagree with this -O(1,2,3) comment.  Some older gcc's especially on
some redhat distros are broken, and using optimizations could lead to
miscompilations, especially in things as complicated as half-life.  Use
gcc -V to verify your gcc version and then check google for threads that
mention problems with your compiler version.
