Well, LCD shouldn't have any effect.

Shrug. Game developers usually aren't supposed to provide support
directly. That's part of the point of publishers. Game developers
that *do* provide support themselves are to be highly commended (for
instance CCP and EVE -- actually I can't think of many others).

Yeah, I had the same problem with Tron 2.0, but as my luck would have it,
they got the new driver out a day after the problem. However, I haven't
experienced either the issue with resolution switching or desktop icons
rearranging with the nvidia drivers (although my desktop icons are a
mess, not sure I'd notice that... or care if it happened).

Yeah, that was a bummer. I'm glad I wasn't one of them. But to be honest, I'm
all for the online enabling of the game. Piracy has gone on long enough, and
the government has proven that the only way to stop it is to do it yourself.
The RIAA's methods are abysmal -- hacking violators' computers is not an option.
Suing people is not an option. Preventing them from stealing in the
first place is.
If there's some inconvenience, what do I care? People have been sticking color
codes and patterns in their manuals for ages. Then people lose the manual and
have to buy a new one. Copy protection has always been annoying, and I
highly doubt there will ever be a completely unannoying one. But Valve's method
is as unannoying as it gets in the modern day and age. The vast majority of us
*do* have a net connection. If you bought the game via Steam like I did
(I figured Valve should get more of my money that way, and Viveni less -- I hope
I'm correct), you obviously have broadband. The 56kers have a minor
problem, yes.
Patience will obviously be needed, and that will cause some outrage. But it's
better then having Valve tank because everyone pirated the game and then getting
no SDK or support for the mod devs and having HL2 be just that -- HL2
without mods.
I really do think that Valve has taken the high road. If nothing
else, their Steam
system is a lot better than most people give them credit for. To be
entirely honest,
I hope they move to an all-steam publishing system and ditch Sierra and Vivendi.
Anything Valve makes will draw a huge croud, and my guess is that
making everyone
use Steam to get their games would have 100x more of an effect on the overall
playability of game than, say.... PowerPlay. Just imagine it... no more 56kers,
because everyone threw their hands up in the air and just got
broadband? No more
publishers giving you barely what you deserve for actually coding the game?
Vivendi says "Hey, no fair trying to compete with us!" Respond with
"Ok. You lose."
