Some kind of persistence framework would be pretty useful for a number of mods I imagine.
Was the original poster looking for something that stored persistent data on a server by server basis, or a centralized server for everyone playing the game? If centralized, it seems like a web-services based approach might be good - for one thing it's not tying up the back end to one specific database. That and almost everyone has port 80 open on firewalls so lower risk of clients being blocked.
