Eureka! I finally figured it out..
I was using a sound recording program called Total Recorder. It's a pretty
uncommon program that is used to record sounds coming out of the sound card
(without the need for any auxilary cable). It behaves as a secondary sound
card and I guess that's what was confusing HL2...

Anyways, I uninstalled this program and voila, no more freezing.
Maybe I should post this up on steampowered forums.... God, that was a
painful 4 days.
