This is the only time I will spam the lists with this info. Who ever runs
the FAQ can feel free to add it to the FAQ.
I have added Mail/News gateways of the hlds and hlds_linux to my news
server. These two news groups are open to the public from my news
server. To connect, add news.shreve.net to your favorite NNTP client.
You will see shrevenet.local.hlds and shrevenet.local.hlds_linux made
available.
The benefits:
- Posts/replies will be threaded in typical Usenet fashion.
- Posts are transparently relayed between the news group and list.
- Group to group posts should be faster than the mailing list.
- I can filter mail-loops more quickly than Valve.
(one is already in place to kill anything from postmaster@)
The drawbacks:
- There is a bit more latency between group/mailing list posts.
Remember! There is no need to post to the news group and the list! Post to
EITHER one, but NOT both! It will take care of it. If you are responding
to the mailing list, always use the hlds*@list.valvesoftware.com address.
Dont reply to both the list and the news group if it presents you with that
option (Pine will).
BTW, I have been subscribing and unsubscribing accounts to the listserver
all night trying to get this setup. The ListServ has been working just
perfectly (and pretty quickly too) for me. I think you guys who have
trouble unsubscribing are just f*cking it all up. Do this:
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
From: <your subscribed e-mail address>
Subject: Doesnt matter
Body: UNSUBSCRIBE hlds (or hlds_linux)
QUIT
Send that and see if it works.
