I think a more relevant question is how much money do you want to spend? For about $200, go with a radeon 9800.
For about $300, go with a geforce 6800. For about $400, get the geforce 6800GT. For about $500, get the geforce 6800Ultra or Radeon x800. Either of these cards will be able to play hl2 or doom3 well. If you want higher framerates, you'll have to disable some of the AA and AF, unless you wanna splurge and get the uber-powerful 6800GT or Ultra, in which case you'll be able to keep the extra features on. >From what I've read, Far Cry is more hardware intensive than hl2 will be, but that's most likely just conjecture. Far cry runs very nicely on a geforce 6800. Here's something to think about...They recorded demos for hl2 how long ago? The newer cards that I mentioned didn't even exist back then! What do you think they had in the machines that they recorded the demos on?
