That's all great for people that actually LIVE in one of these broad regions
but for people in the Midwest, some servers are east coast and some are west
coast so it wouldn't be exactly accurate. Amazing how Valve refuses to give
a "Midwest" region.

Better than nothing I guess but I just don't see why they have to keep
screwing over everyone with their "great ideas."

Right, that's what I was proposing - have the MSL push the server list to
the
client by region, and let the client sort it out at that point by ping time.
You could even take it a step further and have the client request servers
from
a specific region or regions *only*, therby cutting down on the wait time on
receiving the list, and also cutting down on the number of servers players
have to wade thru - they'd only have to search thru those servers in their
region or country.
