You underestimate how difficult it is to program an anti-cheat piece of software for a seven year old game. Though the lack of updates has most likely not been without reason, it has given us an opportunity to search for alternatives.
At least VALVe have updated it this far - I deal with UT2004 servers and their support is absolutely terrible. Seriously, if you think Half-Life is bad, go try one of the newer games. For battlefield kicking someone from a server is like writing an essay, for UT2004, everything (including bans, map lists, etc) is all stored in the same config file which makes running multiple servers a huge pain in the butt when you want to have bans go across all of them while maintaining different maplists and soforth.
You guys have it easy, VALVe has the best server administration system around - yeah, they've had seven years to work on it, but it's been basically the same since the first release seven years ago.
With the anti-cheat thing, there are worse alternatives. Punkbuster is supposed to be a huge pain in the butt to maintain and use, though I haven't had experience with it. UT2004's UTsecure is as good as not having anti-cheat, and everything you need for server administration has to be third party. Cheating death has too many updates that apparently force it's site down every so often because of the mass volume of downloads... VAC's good when it hasn't been disabled by the disabler, though prohibiting a user from having opengl32.dll in their game folder would fix that once and for all =)

VAC is a complete and total failure, and no doubt the people at Valve are having emergency meetings every day to find a solution. I'm just waiting around to see if they really are incompetent boobs, or will redeem themselves and once again make the Half-Life mods the best games ever. Unfortunately, it doesn't look good from here.
Yes indeed! You speak the truth, although I doubt they are having any meetings over it.
Although I will give it to Nick. For a while, updates were coming fast and furious.. like every couple of days. Then..... nothing. What's it been now? 3-4 months at least, maybe longer.
Actually, the last update I see in my emails is 5/6/2004, so that would be 5 months.
