Laptops can do certain types of processing quite efficiently, but they are
notoriously slow when it comes to disk I/O. For example, I can compile HL
maps on my laptop (1.8GHz celeron) faster then on my 1.7GHz Pentium4. But
anything that involves disk i/o, especially if the app starts to dip into
the swap file, can be excruciatingly slow. With 256MB ram, you are probably
dipping into the swap file enough to cause very slow map changes such as you
have been experiencing. You can double your ram to 512MB and that will help
quite a bit. Other then that, there might not be much you can do. A Celeron
based laptop just isn't the best platform to run CS DS on.
