All, We attempted to reinstall to a different location, on another hard drive. No joy.
We copied my working Steam directory tree from my PC to the non working one. Steam crashed. That figures. ipconfig /all on server, working client, non-working client shows everything is the same except: Host Name Description Physical address DNS Suffix Search List (here is a maybe, a very small maybe) IP address The problem machine has additional domains on its DNS suffix search list, But we are all in the same domain. Another clue: it seems that his update to service pack 2 of XP Pro crapped out awhile ago and he had our IT dept. back it out. I suggested that he reformat and reinstall everything, but he isn't a power user. We have identical hardware, but for some reason his machine seems slower than mine. The other guy with intermittent problems has been working fine for the last two days. We have no idea why. I'm about ready to slap a spare hard drive in the problem machine and format, install XP, update XP, install Steam and try again. I wish I had the time, but I do have to work for a living. I can only spend a little time on this problem, mostly during lunch when I could be fragging. ::: Venting mode on ::: I still think Steam blows. In addition: why a dedicated LAN server does a validation on a client on the same LAN is beyond me. I guess that LAN parties require an internet connection, or the participants need to setup the PC before leaving home. Am I the only one who thinks that is LAME? I am all for protecting a copyright, but Steam seems to be a real PItA for legit users AND it obviously hasn't kept the pirates and hackers away. I wish someone would port the CS mod to the farcry engine. ::: Venting mode off ::: Thanks for your attention, Dave Z __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
