An alternative if you must is to at least spread them out between different maps in your cycle
You know, that is a most excellent idea that I never thought of! Most everyone will put up with 2-3 sound downloads per map, and it prevents the burden of downloading all of the sounds at once. I have a program that adds the sounds to my .res files, and it would not be hard to modify to spread out the sound downloads. That way, I could even add more sounds to snd-conf without placing excessive burden on players.

I agree so long as there is an option to enable or disable... then I don't see the problem. Some enjoy it, some don't..who am I to judge what others want to do with there own servers.
Personally on my server we just have one or two that autodownload, we have a ton of sound triggers, but if you want them you can download the soundpackage off our website, otherwise your basicly unaffected. I'd say about 1/2 - 2/3rds of the regs have downloaded it once they know it exists. Keeps everyone happy this way.
As a recommendation though, no it I don't personally think it's a good idea to auto download a ton of sound files unless it's litterely needed by the mod. An alternative if you must is to at least spread them out between different maps in your cycle, so they don't all come at once yet over a few maps the players aquire them all.
