I've been playing CS since beta 7 about 6 years ago, and steam took over for won for at least 2 years now, dates are a little fuzzy, too much drinking between now and then. So you must have been out of it for quite a while, because steam was around for about 4 years now but it was only like 2 years ago the shut down won and you had to use steam for authenticating.
