Rayne,
That was uncalled for.

Exactly my point, nothing is in the logs and the server isn't crashed so
their's no dump. The bottom line is it's impossible for us to help you fix
what's broken. It takes giving a damn enough to LOOK to find the answer. I'd
rather you just hand AC off to somebody else. Your update yesterday clearly
shows what Valve is/is-not capable of doing well. VAC/VAC2 is simply the
most important thing about your game and for it to be completely ignored is
RIDICULOUS! How about fixing SourceTV while you're at it so leagues can
promo your game and make it more popular for the hackers you can't stop.
Hey, how about release an update you can handle, hey, how about don't have
your guys wipe out every Linux server on planet earth on the Xmas holiday.
Hey, IMPRESS us for a change huh!?

P.S. Obviously we've lost confidence in Valve and your patronizing comments
like "when it's done" has gone too far. Why not just close the list. It's
not like it make a difference to anything anymore.

Subject: RE: [hlds] Servers losing VAC, gettin beyond a joke...
I see this from time to time.
All my boxes are win32 have 1 nic with multiple ips bound to it (one server
per ip)
Generally i see it upon mass restarting. Every few days i batch restart my
servers to get back the memory they leak.
Although it appears on the weekends its worse. Sometimes just restarting a
single server in the middle of the day requires multiple restarts to get it
to go vac.
A restart fixes the problem generally but people are unwilling to do so
sometimes they think it should just work.
I was hoping for some type of retry say 3 retries with a longer timeout
period perhaps? It just generally seems like the server it tries to talk to
doesnt answer in time for whatever reason.
The server does not create any dump file, all you get is a console saying it
couldnt connect and vac is disabled.
If there is a debug mode or anything I can use to gather more information
for you please let me know the procedure and I will make sure to use it the
next time i see it happening during the day.

As you experience the problem any chance you could answer my questions
to help me track this down?

Come on, how can you not reproduce a server losing VAC? Run a few
servers
for a while, ya know, the thing you guys code in there. We run lots
of both
HLDS and SCRDS servers and all of them will lose VAC from time to
time. Both
public servers, private servers and servers we run just for the world
to
play on. All servers use a unique port as well as steam port. It's
intermittent and always has been. Running a little internal LAN
server won't
show you the effects of anything really. You guys need to run publicly
accessible servers and you'll clearly see this issue yourselves. I've
personally seen it happen on RHE3, Debian (Stable), Win2kServer,
Win2k3Server and Win2k3Ent.X64 server. There is no rhyme or reason to
it. It obviously is lack of communication between the game servers
and the VAC
servers. Whether that be from line saturation or just poor network
connectivity of the VAC servers is unclear but it DOES happen. Daily
to most
of us here. I just cannot believe you put ANY solid effort into
reproducing
our environment and fail to see one of those servers insecure. I just
checked our list and found two from looking about 2 hours ago. If you
have something I should look for in logs then by all means give us
the phrase to
search for. But don't assume we'll accept "we can't reproduce it" and
call
the case closed. I'll be HAPPY to help run this useless AC on our
servers
out of lack of options since Valve is too nuts about coding to allow
somebody that gives a damn to do a better job of it.

I cannot reproduce this problem (nor am I sure exactly what the
problem
is, log excerpts and minidumps would be useful). How do you know you
are "losing VAC"? How do you know that a restart doesn't fix the
problem (do
you wait a little for login sequence to complete?) What are the
configurations of the machines with the problem? Do you have other
machines that do not exhibit the problem?

Currently we have to reset our servers multiple times a day because
they are losing VAC.
Often a server needs 2 or 3 resets to get VAC back active.
We have 2 choices... Reboot a filled server (Looking bad vs ur
players if your constantly resetting servers), or leave server
unsecured as result you attracks 10 cheaters an hour on a full
server.
We need VAC fixed asap as this is getting out of controle!!
