Have you tried simply making a 'games' account for your gameserver and
placing the server install files under a folder owned by it?

That would be the safest bet.

Andrew: The CS-server itself works perfectly as root.. its the update
utility that doesn work as root.. But i chowned the folders inside /root, to
my user. and that way it works.. but i still thinks its sucky
