Quite agreed. The same condition exists with DoD and DoD:S.
The voice-comms aren't the limiting factor, according to the complaints
of my players on the Source games. I agree that the voice comms could
use improvement in both games, but given the complaints I hear they
aren't anywhere near the top of the list.

You and me both. We started a BF2 server instead. Now I should
mention this isn't a clan server, it isn't a pub server, just a sort
of Cheers-like place where people know your name, so I don't have a
large group to draw from, but voice-comms have never made the list.

I expect this will continue to be the case. Sometimes the
job feels like babysitting. Maybe it is. Any job that consists of
playing video games for pay is probably too good to be true :-)

>Why can't valve/steam fix the voice problem in source?

I suspect the voice-comms cover multiple games, so that's
a rather major change to a number of games at one time, having to
change one of the core components. If I were Valve, I'd resist
this until it was a major problem since it opens up so many
variables in so many games.

Also, if I were Valve, I'd include a bit of static at
the beginning and end of a transmission. <squak!> Hotel Echo
this is Mike November, proceed attack plan Alpha <squak!> just
seems a whole lot more radio-like and, for that matter, cool,
than hearing some 12 year old tell me about his acne medication
in perfect clarity.

But then, I'm not Valve. They've not even given me a
dime in consulting fees in spite of the great suggestions I've
given them over the years. I mean, talk about ungrateful!

Seriously, the voice-comms can be improved. I merely
suspect that when faced with gameplay issues in flagship
products the priorities aren't going to be a new codec any time
soon, and based upon the complaints I hear the voice-comms
aren't even on the Top 10 list of the players at large.
