They probably cracked the actual server via exploits in the kernel (or
out of date server software like apache, sshd) but not the HLDS.

Set a cron job to run up2date or whatever update software your distro
uses. If you don't know what update manager or cron then find someone
else who does or switch to OS you can operate.
