Is there a possibility that he retired early because he was shot on duty, and the payout was so massive that he didn't ever need to work again?
This leads me into a new line of questioning surrounding the possibility of him thinking he was playing an fps and got shot, and couldn't reload his save game, but found a cheat code to get unlimited money or something...
