Not every person would see the domain name though, so
I'm sure many people would feel lost.

By populated, I mean if you were browsing the main
server list and looking for a server to play on.  By
having some people redirected to the empty server (or
maybe server with bots in it), it will eventually get
more and more players, plus new players who join
because it looks popular.

Usually when I do play (I admit that I hardly play
anymore due to college), it's on my own server, so I
can't say that I've had any experience.  But in
concept, the load balancing could be a good idea.
People get redirected to a slightly empty server
(maybe bots) and keep playing until more people come
in.  If they were redirected to another server because
the original was full, then more people are bound to
join soon..  I'm not saying that it is usually
implemented well, but at least in concept it is a
somewhat decent idea.  The asking of people that is
being suggested now is not a bad idea; happy
compromise between the people who hate redirect and
people who think it's a godsend. :)
