Correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't it Emperor Constantine who set the
date to Winter solstice so that it would therefore be better accepted by
his people as it coincide with the pagan calibrations. But his desire to
follow Christianity was initially a farce as he feared some sort of
uprising as it was the current 'in' thing and he didn't want a revolt etc ?

Constanatine won a battle where he was outnumbered when he claimed to
see a cross in the sky and heard the words "by this sign you will
conquer" he had all his troops but a cross on their shields and won
the battle. It wasn't an "in" thing to be Christian until after he
declared it the state religion.
