We have a relatively large ban list on our dedicated CS 1.6 server, approximately 124KB. When the map changes, it seems like it takes the hl1 engine about 25 seconds to chunk through it, causing the server to be unavailable for players to join until it finishes this process. Players that were currently connected, are waiting for the nextmap to start during this window. CPU use jumps to 100% locked while this is happening.
Does anyone know if this is a known issue with cs / hl1, or if possibly if I have a misconfiguration of the server? I've talked with another server op buddy, and he said he had the same problem, and fixed it by reducing his banfile size. I really don't want to do this, as these are valid bans of bastage players we don't want returning to our server. I'm looking at using a mySQL db (like amxbans, or something we custom write) to store bans in, if there's no way to get around this beyond trimming the banned file, however, I'd rather not "externalize" the ban list if I can get the server configured to not take so long to process the banned.txt file.
