Hey thanks I found out what it was

The halflife.wad file But I don't understand why -verify_all didn't pick it
up I had to delete the wad and redownload it.  And I found it by dumb luck

You could try Filemon or Procmon. They will show you file accesses, and
you
can use the filter to show only the hlds ones.
