Nice link.
I tried it (Vista Ult x86) and when I tried to start the service I got the
error -
The TF2 service on Local computer started and then stopped.
Is this a Vista thing ( I noticed it only said 2000-2k3)- or have I
configured it wrong.
Anyone know of a cheap (free) way of running srcds.exe as a service in
Vista?

I don't know about #1 or #2, but you can setup your own service in Windows
using the Instsrv.exe and Srvany.exe apps. If you don't mind a little
registry work, its freer than FireDaemon. Here's a nice howto:
