Evolution allows for marking the text to be quoted. And I also use my phone to read this stuff when I'm on the road.
But I guess it is to complicated and too much work for people to trim down messages. This behavior is typical nowadays.. why should I do something if the other people could do something. Problem is that sometimes other people can't do something about it. I can't switch from digest to normal mail as I would get to many mails. And the problem is not only the scrolling through 100 lines of triple quotes but also the amount of data. In the old days there was some like quoting etiquette but nowadays people are mainly selfish... this has come with unlimited bandwith and data volumes and the fact that in the old days mainly people who did know what they were doing were using forums (mainly bulletin boards at that time) and mailing lists. I like that this list isn't moderated like the forums from valve because some of the forum rules are stupid or a very gray area but sometimes I would wish that that would be at least some rules people would stick too. Most official mailing lists have some rules about quoting, also because those mailing lists are normally archived. And before somebody complains that I quoted the full message... I quoted only the original message, not anything beneath it, I didn't quote the rest of the digest I receive and I did change the subject. And now ask yourself the question why I did do that... For me? No, it means more work, I did it as courtesy for the others.
