I recently noticed that there are a few servers which seem to have active-x controls in the MOTD. A nice flash-enabled motd might seem nice, but if you do not have the proper controls installed it also causes a nice UAC popup (Vista) and eventually leads to hl2.exe being stuck on 100% cpu. Besides the obvious choice of not playing on those servers or installing the addon manually (or not running vista ^^), is there actually a way for end-users to avoid being asked to install an addon? The servers that I saw did not try to do anything malicious, but just getting the popup or even crashing from the game is quite annoying.
