I'm trying to help someone out, but I can't quite puzzle this error out
since I don't have the experience to solve it. It works quite well on my own
machine but he can't get anything out of the Linux HLDS package. Here's what
he wrote.

--
I recently installed Linux 7.3 but could not find any 3110 tar files for the
full hl linux installation.

I download 3110_full.bin from fileplanet but could not chmod to tar. I
received an error message: Cannot allocate memory.

My Svr sys specs r:
Intel Server SDS2 dual 1.26g processors
512 ECC Ram
18G Seagate SCSI 10K rpm drive

Help needed & I am quite a newbie in Linux.
Thank u in advance.

I asked him to clarify and it turns out that he seems to have managed to
change the execute permissions on the file. But when he attempts to execute
the file he gets the following error; error reading meta data, cannot
allocate memory.

It's also Red Hat 7.3 (Not Linux 7.3. Took me hours to eek that out of the
poor soul....)

I can't replicate the error on my own Slackware install now matter how hard
I
try to screw it up. And I searched the web, and all I could find was that it
may have been caused by a lack of RAM. But at 512MB of RAM, it's hard to see
how unless he's running all kinds of crap.

Any ideas?
