> A3D = Aureal 3D (Audio) > Much like EAX of Creative (SB Live! cards)
A3D was Aureal's answer to 3D positional audio. A3D and Aureal's products were widely thought to be superior to Creative's hardware, and A3D was definitely superior to Creative's EAX technology. Aureal was much like nVidia in that it was a small company that produced a superior product. Unfortunately, unlike nVidia, it was never able to gain a big enough market share foothold, a position that left it vulnerable to Creative's buy-out attempts. Creative was finally able to force its hand, at which point it bought and buried Aureal, its only *real* competition at the time. Right now you've got more like the PC and the PC-compatible thing going on with Santa Cruz and such. Anyway, there you go. I'm still bitter about my Monster Sound MX200 not having real Win2k/XP support because the bastards at Creative did such a thorough job of burying Aureal and the A3D standard. -- Eric (the Deacon remix) _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux
