My solution to the 'stat whores', as we called them, was to simply turn
off the stats. People whined bitterly about it, but they got used to it
after a while, and the level of actual *team* playing in the server
increased dramatically.

Sure, it's nice to know how well you're playing and guage against other
people, but even if you're not a 'stat whore', you're still playing with
the thought in the back of your head that a bad decision could mess up
your stats.. so maybe you don't rush out and help your team when you
could - not necessarily a concious decision.. you just do it without
thinking. Ultimately, turning off stats has made the game a lot more fun
for me personally - I highly recommend it.
