My solution to the 'stat whores', as we called them, was to simply turn off the stats. People whined bitterly about it, but they got used to it after a while, and the level of actual *team* playing in the server increased dramatically. Sure, it's nice to know how well you're playing and guage against other people, but even if you're not a 'stat whore', you're still playing with the thought in the back of your head that a bad decision could mess up your stats.. so maybe you don't rush out and help your team when you could - not necessarily a concious decision.. you just do it without thinking. Ultimately, turning off stats has made the game a lot more fun for me personally - I highly recommend it.
