Before I say anything else I first have to say this very very VERY important thing... NEVER RUN HLDS AS ROOT! This goes for pretty much all other software too. There are no benefits at all by doing it, you are just opening up one huge security hole just waiting for a scriptkiddy to come around and take controll over your server.

For the screen thing I really don't understand it... Maybe you could give me exact directions on what to do and wehre to do it ? my halflife is in /halflife/hlds_l/
This will start your server in a screen named csserver in the background screen -AmdS csserver /halflife/hlds_l//hlds_run -game cstrike [etc...]
This will (re)attach to your screensession called csserver screen -r csserver
This will detach from your current screen C-a C-d (ie ctrl+a ctrl+d)
This will show the compleate manual if you want to learn more man screen
Also now that we are here on the subject how would I get the machine to instead of booting up in linux do it in failsafe ? Like on the screen it lets me choose from linux failsafe and floppy and linux is default, and also I want to boot up into text mode and networking instead of gui. thanks for all the help, oh yeah and I reboot because my machine sucks I am not good at all at configuring it, sometimes the network will crash, then hlds will just crash and not come up and then some other error, rebooting gets rid of all my problems.
Ouch. Sounds to me like your entire Linux dist/installation is a compleate mess. I would recomend a compleate reinstall from scratch of a dist that doesn't install a lot of unnesecary crap for you (eg X is not needed at all on a server). My personal preference for a dist is www.gentoo.org , which has an excellent step-by-step installation guide and a very powerfull and easy to manage install&update software tool (next to automatic). The boot&installation CD is only a 150MB or so download too. A very basic installation from a starge-3 tarball should be adequate for your needs.

Software never has bugs. It just develops random features. =)
