I am planning the building of a game server rental farm, and trying to weigh up between Dual AMD's or an Opteron (Perhaps Dual Opteron later).
How have people found Opteron's to be for HLDS server performance? How do they compare to Dual AMD MP's (or even modified XP's for dual CPU[1]), and Dual Xeons?
I realise there is a lot of info in the archives, but I have not seen it definitively outlined before as far as I know.
I am planning to get 2, 12 player clan servers per CPU.
I have used P4's and XP's in single CPU configurations, and generally get about 40 players (ie 16 player and a 24 player server) on a P4 2.4Ghz (stock red hat 9). Based on that, may get 3, 12 player servers per CPU.
RAM Recomendations?
