Everyone,I am bored with this.
I spent several hours gathering this information, and I hope that some of you can find it useful. Let me preface these results with the fact that I was unable to run 2.4.9 on the SMP machine because it would kernel panic (likely SMP I don't know but I didn't have the time to figure it out, so I used another test machine).
For mysIelf, and probably for a lot of people, it is not possible to run a 2.4.9 kernel due to people running more recent hardware, and file systems, that are not supported by the 2.4.9 kernel - and patches are neither available nor sufficient to get their modern hardware to run on such an old kernel.
If hlds runs better under 2.4.9 rather than 2.4.22, and the only change is the kernel and not the program you are running, then surely you should be addressing your complaints/observations to the linux kernel developers mailing list and not here.
For me, I have no problems with CPU usage. Yes, the hlds process CPU usage has steadily increased with the kernels and half-life releases, but so has the hardware that I use. My first servers were an AMD k6-400 closely followed by a celeron 300A @ 450MHz.
I would also like to add that being an (unofficial) SDK developer since January is hardly grounds to call oneself a guru. And just what qualifications/work experience do you have in your Microsoft OSes and *nix systems?
Matt.
