The difference between the retail version of the game and the steam version that makes it necessary for the cd / dvd authentication is that the retail version is setup to work in offline mode indefinately.
So just to clarify - the CD/DVD version, once unlocked, is able to be played in offline mode forever (until, I assume, it is reinstalled off CD/DVD)? And the Steam version requires authentication every two weeks or so to remain in offline mode?
