Quake 3 had rendering SMP support and it was a performance hit not a benefit in most cases.
I believe this was due to the rendering which Q3 offloaded to a second CPU was the same as that offloaded to modern T&L GPU's. With the advent of GeForce video cards, Q3 SMP became redundant and infact slower as it was forcing Q3 to calculate on a slower all-purpose CPU, rather than a T&L optimised GPU.
