Wasn't one of the workarounds/solutions for this to enable linprocfs
or procfs? I believe someone (Alfred) said it checks proc first to get
the frequency and if that fails it uses some old asm code to determine
it?  Do you have proc filesystem enabled? or linprocfs maybe?  Search
the archives for crashes involving this...in the last 2-3 months.
