Agreed about the mass marking of email. Pine is your friend. :D

As for the list, I'm not sure that will work as you expect. Creating a
GSP only list assumes, but not limited to the following:

1) The people on the list will know what they're talking about.

If you put 100 engineers/admins in a room and ask for a solution you'll
get 400 answers... you might even get some correct answers.

I would hate to think that a GSP admin's knowledge is valued more than
another admin's knowledge. A prime example of this is in the Intrution
Detection/Security Industry. Snort is maintained for the most part by
the entire community, not just a select few. That is why snort is better
for IDS/IDP than the commercially available products. In this case Snort
is this list and the Company is the GSP only list.

If you're tired of "how do I set my hostname" questions then you should
have your pre-canned responce ready.

Please visit www.steampowered.com or www.srcds.com or www.serverwiki.org,
etc. I can understand not wanting to deal with seemingly trivial
requests, but you don't want to come off sounding high and mighty either.

2) The peoeple on the list will want to share their "secrets"

I know that not all GSP admins identify themselves as such. Also, if you
know of something that make your server run better then your competition
are you really going to share? That's a poor business model and I'll see
you on the non-GSP list in a few months.

I share a lot of my knowledge when applicable, but I wouldn't out and out
send somebody something that would take away from my profit... not without
having an established relationship with that admin first. I can think of
two GSPs that I openly share information with... for everyone else there
is this list or lists like this.

3) Anyone who is not a GSP will have nothing of value to add

I know some young guys who spend hours just messin with kernels, game
configs, etc. They aren't GSPs, but they know a boat load... I wouldn't
trade them for the world. Again, refer to point 1.

4) The GSP list will be moderated or controlled better than a public list

The list is only as good as the moderation. In order to deliver messages
in a timely fashion and to ensure that they are not inendated with 1000s
of requests, value has configured mailman to not use the full moderation
capabilities (I don't blame them at all). That being said, in order to
have a GSP list we'd have to have more moderation.. Alfred, Any takers
from Valve to moderate the list 24/7? If it pays well I'll take the job.

5) There aren't enough "game server" lists and forums availble
online today.

We have tons of sites today devoted to gaming, game admining and the like.
A boat load of them contain info about HL games... most CS, but still.
Let's not water down the gravy by creating yet another list/site.

I think ServerWiki is a great idea in that it breaks away from the
mailing list concept... I think this list is great.

If you watch the flame wars and come armed with your asbestos underware
and your pre-canned replies for non-technical questions then you'll be
justfine.

That being said, does anyone know how to change a server's hostname?
