Hey,

We use Fedora Core 4 on dual Xeon 3.2ghz (2Mb L2) and run without any
problem 14 CS1.6 server (12 players) at stable 250fps.
(yes we recompiled the kernel)

Never tested Mandriva though but I think FC has less service layers than
Mandriva, which is better.
And if you could provide us figures that actually shows a 20-26% boost,
I'd be glad to "upgrade" to Mandriva ;-)

btw, can you explain the "Fedora Core X doesn't use as much resources as
Windows. But only by a very small fraction <6-8%" ?

Thx!

If you use Fedora Core X (just Red Hat's free version for all thoes cheapos
out there) you may as well just run your servers on Windows server OS
prefered.

Our findings with Fedora Core X vs Windows is Fedora Core X doesn't use as
much resources as Windows. But only by a very small fraction <6-8%.

If you want a really good Linux OS for a server no matter what
configurations you aquire use *MANDRIVA*! Low over head with
resources giving linux servers a 20-26% boost over other Linux distros. Not
to mention we get a peek if 950 FPS to as low as 450. And yes, even those
cheapo's can get the free version of this as well if their wallet is too
thin for the $76 USD price tag it holds for the middle version of the three.

We've been using Mandriva since 3/2005 when we made the switch from Windows
and which we had done so sooner and we will never go back!

so you would suggest this

   * Intel Xeon 5130 Woodcrest 2.0GHz Socket 771 2U Passive Processor
is it worth doing a dual 2 core I would be better just getting as more
powerful ?

What do you think would be possible with this setup or could you

You'd be much better off not buying any 7xxx series chipsets; if
you're going intel, pick up a woodcrest or get amd..

FWIW 7xxx chipsets have too many problems, and HT on those cpu's
causing issues (i think some chipset errata tries to make the HT route
IRQ's)
