Moreover ethernet link negotiation doesn't count link quality as a factor. It only negotiates capabilities of interfaces. If you have bad cables then you have to manually lower advertised link types. Linux tools are mii-tool (older) and ethtool. About duplex. To be 100% precise if you set fixed speed and half-duplex(*) on the one end and autonegotiation on the other end link will work at designated speed and half-duplex without problems.
