My servers never crashed after ntpdate too, I even tried it right now, just to verifie. I use Debian 4.0, so this might not be a general Linux issue. On another mailing list (https://lists.dulug.duke.edu/pipermail/dulug/2002-March/011263.html) I read, that some apps don't like the time to change more than one second backwards, this might be the case for steam too.
