I guess I'm the first to try this suggestion.
I was already running kernel  2.6.22.1-smp, so I patched it with 
patch-2.6.22.1-rt9 turned on the "Complete Preemption (Real-time)", and 
compiled and installed the new kernel.

Using this option seems no better nor worse than before. I still get pronounced 
end-of-round lags (which seems to be my only problem before and after the 
patch).

I'm sorry to see the problem is not fixed, but I'm happy that at least someone 
is taking initiative to solve the linux DS problems.
