You messed something up, the updater was running in the wrong directory.

Updating Installation Checking/Installing 'left 4 dead 2 demo common' version 6 Checking/Installing 'left 4 dead 2 demo linux dedicated server' version 4 HLDS installation up to date Running a benchmark to measure system clock frequency... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- While the server is running and there are already people playing on it, the steam process is still running in the background downloading another copy of the server files into the main server installation.
