Ah, I was under the impression that *nix user names were limited to lowercase letters. But after some research it appears that it is only limited by convention on a number of systems, the Single UNIX Specification allows the use of both upper and lower case in the user name.
I'm trying to research the origin and purpose of the lowercase convention, but so far I've come up with nothing saying that it *shouldn't* be supported on a modern *nix system. That said, there were a number of people reporting that mixed case user names cause unexpected behavior with some applications. Especially since your servers apparently worked prior to the update, this looks like a regression and I hope the devs fix it.
