There are three main reasons for some douche to run a fake server:
1) "steal" traffic from rival communities
2) damage reputation/image of targeted community/server
3) to spread malware via a MotD vulnerability
Though the 3rd is less likely nowandays, back in the day, I ran into
issues with a particular CS server community that faked the server I
was running (with additional "#" to get it to appear on top) which
would then redirect to their own server.
Luckily, they were stupid enough to try to hack our servers and we
were able to their game hosting accounts disabled due to ToS violations.
Yea, who would've thought CS/TF2/etc would be so political...

Why shouldn't VALVE fix it?
Its fake, the server isn't really there and the players isn't
there. The servers is there only for advertise in serverbrowser.
Its not about the names, its about the serverlist getting BIG and
messy. Its harder to find good REAL servers that works.
Ok, let me get this straight.
There are servers that use YOUR name but can't be connected to.
And they do that to advertise in the serverbrowser.
So they advertise your name and gain nothing from it.
What is the point? Promote your brand for fun?
