It's difficult to say without seeing a demo ourselves.

It's the Xmas holidays, kids are off school et al, perhaps that's why you're seeing more cheaters than usual.

I tend not to expect to see a really skilled player playing on the same server as me. Statistically speaking it's unlikely. Firstly skilled players tend to play with and against other skilled players - they aren't randomly distributed across the servers. Secondly, even if they were randomly distributed, you probably wouldn't expect there to be enough of them for 1 per server.

So whilst it certainly is not impossible, it's very improbable the world's best player happened to join the same server as me. That said, there are different degrees of ability. I regularly get accused of cheating. This isn't because I'm particularly good or skilled at TF2 though, it's because they are particularly bad at it. So you have to be very wary of false reports from people who can't play who decide that if they are killed a few times by the same player, or if they struggle to kill someone, it must be down to cheating.

If someone appeared as though they were the world's best player on my server (in terms of score + ability) then I might think "hmm, they are cheating" - but I think I'm safe statistically from banning a skilled player and if I'm wrong, well, what's he doing on my server in the first place?

Most cheaters won't look skilled though. They might get a lot of hits or headshots, but the way they play will look average, like everyone else. That's usually what I look for. Movement is perhaps the biggest difference between skilled and not. Moreso than aim.

Because it's rare a truly skilled player will be good at aiming by itself and completely hopeless or average at other aspects of the game. Whereas that's almost a certainty with someone using an aimbot. Some classes that will be more apparent than others.

After I've banned someone, I tend to google the steam id. Most cheats are banned somewhere else (or at least accused of it) and there's usually a forum thread somewhere to that end.

Quite often cheaters will act out an immature role of being brilliant in chat. It's like they want to get caught or at least they want people to recognise their "skill" You mentioned silent ones though, so you can't tell from that. Here in the UK/EU I expect many people connecting to my server not to speak English, so I wouldn't read much into them not replying to chat.

I noticed a couple on my server when I switched to cp_foundry the other day. Which I suppose is a lot in the same day, because I'd only banned a couple of people up to that point over several months.
