I think the general opinion has been that goldsource and source have slightly better performance on Windows. That being said, I'm getting significant return on my "free" investment in Debian boxes.
Gentoo is nice, but to me all the work in customizing the kernel and reading/learning about the kernel... It's good to do when you want to learn about Linux, but I want my box to run without issue all the time, and Gentoo just requires you to know "too much" about what you're doing, IMO. I'd rather just stand the kernel up and move on. The little extra performance I'm going to squeeze out with Gentoo isn't worth my time (especially since game servers just cost me money to run!)
