I believe this would of made the testing better. As it is now people have to decided which version they want to play. And as a result none of the steampipe betas have enough players to do any real testing at this time.
DOD:S beta had a full server the first day, but then those people switched back when it started to empty and went back to playing using the old DOD:S client. The old "hasn't been updated in ages" CS:S beta is also more popular now than the SteamPipe beta is. And you can't even compare how many players that beta had when it first launched. Furthermore if it was a separate game then more people would have learned about it in general, just from seeing this beta listed under their actual game.
