May I suggest you use a true document processor, with built in indexing/TOC generators, element (chapters, paragraph, list, figures etc) numbering, and a whole lot more. Lyx: http://www.lyx.org/ It's cross platform compatible, very stable, fast, and once you learn it, it will make this project infinitely more efficient to create, edit, layout, modify, and update the book.
