May I suggest you use a true document processor, with built in
indexing/TOC generators, element (chapters, paragraph, list, figures
etc) numbering, and a whole lot more.

Lyx: http://www.lyx.org/

It's cross platform compatible, very stable, fast, and once you learn
it, it will make this project infinitely more efficient to create,
edit, layout, modify, and update the book.
Output to pdf, html, latex, whatever. Heavily used for math/PHD/
technical documents.
