Did you uninstall and reinstall your rubies after installing the dependencies?

Your problem is most likely to do with rubygems. Rubygems are designed by & for developers, and RPM/Deb were designed by system by & for sysadmins. The two are subtly incompatible. IMO, it's gem that's at fault, but many disagree with me.

I recommend completely uninstalling any system ruby and install everything through RVM.
