Using rvm, I installed rubinius (rbx-head), and loaded up all the gems to use hobo (rails 3.0.7, et al, hobo 1.3.0.pre31) and was finally able to create a hobo app, complete the wizard configuration, run the rails server, and do an administration creation and login with no problems.
So, there must be something with ruby 1.9.2 and 1.8.7 that is causing the openssl load error that isn't happening in rubinius, or when just using rails. If I can figure it out I'll post the problem/solution here.
