Hi Brandon! I've been working with Hobo for 13 months now and I would not have been able to achieve with plain Rails what I have achieved with Hobo. The main features I now enjoy are Dryml templating, the persistent permission system, lifecycles, the Ajax features and the Scaffolding features. It is quite a learning curve though, that's true.
For me the difference between Hobo and Rails projects are comparable to the differences between my Rails and Sinatra projects, but Hobo still being Rails compatible. The frequency here is quite low, but the content/noise ratio is good. And all the questions I have asked in the beginning where answered friendly and correctly. I don't like Googles interface here, but the content is extremely helpful. If you would like to describe the project you are thinking about, I would add my 2cents, if I'd use Hobo for it (or plain Rails or Sinatra or Ember - that's my portfolio these days).
