Hi Friends -
Looking for some truffleshooting assistance.
:)
Strange behavior with my dsl connection, last used successfully Monday evening for a CurlChat Pro session...
Have uninstalled the assorted Norton firewall & antivirus software that came with the router.
Have configured the McAfee firewall used previously, keeping same settings as were previously used successfully.
Have run msconfig and removed unnecessary things from startup and also cleaned the registry.
Have disconnected the router and all cabled boxes.
Have run scandisk (found & fixed errors).
Have run SpyBot (found and nuked two instances of one malware).
Have run avg & stinger - no viruses found.
Have run Disk Cleanup...
Defrag does not need to be run at this time.
Have powered down computer and modem.
Recycled the power on the dsl modem and waited until the indicator lights indicated things ready.
Booted the computer and closed down all extraneous applications.
Launched InternetExplorer and was not able to connect to any sites, including my isp.
Launched Netscape and was also not able to connect to any sites.
Launched AOL 9 and was not able to connect - it was not able to detect the TCP/IP connections.
Checked the indicator lights on the dsl modem throughout and they show packet activity.
While troubleshooting Internet Explorer, received an alarm from firewall indicating a SYN flood - which means that incoming traffic is happening and that my computer is being seen by the internet even though i cannot access the net.
Blocked the IP address where the SYN flood (denial of service attack) originated.
Retried IE, Netscape and aol.
Tried Trillian and to my surprise was able to connect successfully with all modules (yahoo, hotmail, and aim)...
Tried ICQ LIte and to my surprise was also able to connect successfully.
Retried IE, Netscape and aol, again to no avail.
So, why do two apps access the internet via my dsl and the others do not? I checked the firewall settings and they are fine. I turned off the firewall and even then could not connect with those apps. Turned it right back on because of the SYN flood.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
befuddled in boston...
love and peace,
joyce
